Schools Project
This Project, which covers Glasgow and surrounding areas, aims to:
- support schools in promoting an open and positive attitude toward people with epilepsy
- reduce misconceptions and stigma surrounding epilepsy
- provide age appropriate information about epilepsy and deliver fun and interactive talks to pupils
- provide Epilepsy Awareness sessions to teachers and staff
- offer support to children and families living with epilepsy.
Talks for pupils are age appropriate and relate to several areas of the Curriculum for Excellence and our Education and Outreach Workers are Disclosure checked.
Epilepsy Awareness sessions for pupils include guidance on:- epilepsy facts
- recognising a seizure
- appropriate management of a seizure
- the impact of epilepsy on children, young people and families.
Sessions for Primary 1/2 pupils last approximately 15-20 minutes and between 30 minutes and 1 hour for older pupils.
Sessions for staff include guidance on:- epilepsy facts
- seizure first aid
- the effects of epilepsy on learning and behaviour
- reducing the stigma surrounding epilepsy.
Sessions last around 45 minutes to 1 hour and can be arranged at a time that suits the school, including in-service days and twilight courses
All sessions are free of charge and can be adapted to meet the needs of each individual school.
During 2008, our Schools Project delivered sessions to 1,478 pupils and 193 teachers took part in epilepsy awareness education sessions. We hope to increase this number during 2009 and would urge all schools in Glasgow and surrounding areas to take this opportunity so that together we can promote an open and positive attitude towards people with epilepsy.
